Function of the Unit

By living in The Cottages, residents benefit from intensive support and supervision on a 1:1 basis which gives them the opportunity to practice and develop their rehabilitation skills in a safe environment.

Decision making is encouraged and residents are also responsible for shared activities including menu planning and assisting with cooking the main meal of the day.

All residents have their own rehabilitation programme and goals, care plans and risk assessments.

To encourage independence residents are supported to visit their GP at the surgery and self medicate.

Activities

A weekly house meeting is held in which residents are able to raise issues of interest and concern, share ideas regarding the running of the unit and plan activities.

The aim is for the residents to build up confidence and be able to access and use community facilities. Activities help to provide a daily structure, occupation and interest.

In House Activities include:

  • Table games, including scrabble and chess
  • Arts and crafts
  • Video evenings
  • Harewood Park's gardening club

Some residents have their own Play station, computer, TV and music players.

Community Activities include:

  • Rambling group
  • Rethink drop in centre and horticultural project
  • College Courses
  • Voluntary Work i.e. working in a charity shop
  • Leisure Centre for swimming, badminton and the gym

All residents benefit from having a national bus pass and they also have the use of Harewood Park's own transport. They go out to the cinema, theatre, for meals, day trips and to the shops.
